Months after his mother, Tanya Byrd, was brutally murdered and beheaded by Bahsid McLean of the Bronx, Zarah Coombs's mother killed their 4-year-old son, Zamair.
The Assassination of Tanya Byrd
When Zamair's mother Tonya Byrd was three months old in February 2013, her father Bahsid McLean repeatedly stabbed her in the neck, chopped up her body with a saw, took a picture of himself clutching her severed head, posted it on Facebook, and then packed the pieces into three plastic garbage bags.
After that, he divided each bag of body parts into duffel bags and dispersed them over the Bronx. A dog walker found the first duffel bag, which contained a severed skull. Her chest and shoulders were in the second bag; parts of an arm and a leg were in the third bag.
It wasn't Bahsid acting alone. He reported to the authorities that the 45-year-old home health attendant was stabbed by his 26-year-old friend William Harris as he was dismembering her body. He stated that he felt "obligated" to cut the body to pieces.
Bahsid's Difficult Life
After divorcing Zamair's mother, Vera McLean, who subsequently changed her name to Zarah Coombs, Bashid moved in with his mother. After attacking two police officers in 2010, he was on probation.
Prior to the horrifying killing, Bashid had a difficult existence. He was angry with his mother, and his actions greatly scared her. Bashid frequently lashed out, lit fires, and destroyed property. Tanya believed Bahsid was abusing his Down syndrome brother, Nasyr, who was 7 years old. Throughout his childhood, he had to take medication every day to address mental illnesses, including schizophrenia and lived in several psychiatric facilities.
Arrest, Body Parts, and a Missing Person Report
After clearing the area, Bahsid went to the Bronx station of the NYPD and filed a missing person report on his mother. At the Bronx apartment, police investigated the report. The stench of bleach was readily apparent to them, which made them believe Bahsid knew more than he was telling them.
Bahsid made a complete admission to the crime once the cops informed him they had discovered his mother's head. William Harris was detained by police and charged with the murder when they took him into custody.
William killed his mother, according to Bahsid, and threatened to kill him and his younger brother if he didn't assist in dismembering and getting rid of the body. He said that he drained his mother's blood in the bathroom before mutilating her body and stated that he helped William out of terror.
During a search of the house, investigators found a saw, latex gloves, and a shopping cart that they think Bahsid used to move his mother's disfigured body around the Bronx. The unit had been thoroughly cleaned and had a strong bleach odor. There was no shower curtain in the bathroom.
After a fight, Bahsid stabbed his mother, according to Assistant District Attorney Aaron Kaplan, after she told him he was a bad father and wanted him to move out of the house. After buying a power saw and leaving their shared apartment, he committed a horrifying crime.
Bahsid testified during his trial that he had heard voices since he was a young child. Although Bahsid's attorneys had hoped for a "not guilty by reason of insanity" finding, he was found guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree assault, and unlawful dissection of a human body. He received a sentence of 25 years to life in jail. At the Clinton Correctional Facility, where he is serving his sentence, he will be available for parole in 2039.
The Murder of Bahsid's Son Zarah Coombs and Bahsid had a brief but tumultuous relationship. The pair split up after Zarah became pregnant, and she fell in love with Jamar Richardson. The pair was a parent to two of their own children.
When he discovered Zamair unconscious in a plastic tote full of water in January 2017, the police were sent to the couple's residence.
Zarah had struck Zanaur with a broomstick, causing him to pass out. While she attended to her one-year-old and nursed her newborn, she filled the plastic tote with water and put him inside.
Zamair was discovered by paramedics hardly breathing and with his head submerged in the tote. Physicians exerted every effort to preserve Zamair's life. Sadly, the next day he passed away from his wounds.
Zamair had multiple abrasions and bruises all over his body, which the medical staff and nurses found to be signs of extensive past abuse.
Zarah admitted beating Jamair to death with a broomstick during a police interrogation. She acknowledged that she submerged his body for "a considerable amount of time" in the water-filled tote. Zarah said that she snapped at Zamair because of money problems.
Zarah is incarcerated at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for a term of 17 years.
