In a glitzy ceremony at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House on Park Lane in London, the Lexus LBX, a hybrid SUV hailed for making eco-friendly driving affordable, clinched the coveted title of "Car of the Year." The awards, akin to the Oscars for the motoring world, were presented by consumer champion What Car? in partnership with MotorEasy, marking their yearly celebration since 1978.
Affordable Luxury for City Drivers:
Deputy editor Darren Moss highlighted that the LBX, with a price tag starting below £30,000, emerged as an attractive and luxurious option for city dwellers looking to transition to greener vehicles. Moss emphasized the LBX's versatility as a "city runaround," particularly for London drivers. He pointed out that with prices starting at £30,000 or less, drivers navigating the city could predominantly rely on electric mode without the nagging range anxiety. Home charging capability added to its appeal, making it a blend of affordability and sustainability. On a leasing deal, Moss suggested the possibility of driving this eco-friendly SUV for as little as £338 a month.
Double Victory: Car of the Year and Small SUV Category:
Notably, the Lexus LBX secured a double victory by not only bagging the prestigious Car of the Year title but also triumphing in the Small SUV category. Judges lauded its efficient hybrid system, luxurious interior, and attractive pricing. What Car? editor Steve Huntingford emphasized that the Car of the Year title goes to the model that has made the most significant strides, and this year, it was the Lexus LBX. He commended it for outperforming rivals in the competitive small SUV market, being the first in its class to seamlessly combine hybrid efficiency with big-car luxury, all at an appealing price point.
Additional Accolades:
Lexus continued its winning streak by securing the Reliability Award for a remarkable seventh consecutive year. Sister brand Toyota also shone, winning Family Car of the Year (Corolla) and Estate Car of the Year (Corolla Touring Sports). BMW and Kia each took home three awards, while Renault celebrated victories in two categories.
Electric Domination:
In a notable trend, all winners in the Safety Award, Best Executive Car, and Readers’ Choice Award (consumers' most anticipated car of the year) categories were electric for the second consecutive year, underscoring the growing prominence of electric vehicles in the automotive landscape.
